Retaining Walls Cost

We often get asked what retaining walls cost, so we've added this page to give people an idea of what to budget for and expect. There are a number of different factors that can affect what retaining walls cost, a few of the key factors are materials used, load bearing capacity, size, soil type and access on the site. All of these factors can contribute to the complexity of the project and therefore the price associated to building it. We'll focus mainly on the type of materials used in this case when discussing what retaining walls cost, keeping in mind that the other variables mentioned may affect the overall cost in the long run.

Here are some general rates that are based strictly on the materials used. Precast retaining walls cost in the range of $60-70 per linear foot range and are highly labour intensive from a construction standpoint. Timber retaining walls are typically about $25 - $35 per linear foot range, although these systems are becoming less and less common in industry today since people are inclined to go with stone products (natural or precast) before resorting to wood/timber. Natural stone retainment involves stacking rocks or even mortaring rock together. Stone selection and material costs are much higher with this type of construction. Labour costs are often higher as well since it is a skilled craft and involves heavy equipment for installation. Natural stone retaining walls cost in the range of $120-135 per linear foot.

Regardless of materials used for construction, a good retaining wall built to last and priced accordingly must include a proper base, good compaction on backfilled materials and proper drainage throughout. If these items any of these are missing there is a good chance that the wall will not withstand the elements and eventually heave or collapse.

Retaining walls serve both a functional purpose in retaining earth and preventing erosion of higher levels, and also a design enhancement as they can be brought alive by intricate plantings with natural rock faces and textures. Tiered levels add an interest element to a landscape and harmonize the vertical with the horizontal layout. Our team of experts can help you decide if a natural stone, precast concrete retaining wall or some other option is the best solution for your landscape.
